To meet the challenges of this new era, Caritas is taking on new modes of service delivery. In reviewing the history of Caritas, we find that the first decade ( 50's ) was marked by relief work for new migrants. In the second decade ( 60's ) we piloted the setting up of three dimensional and professional services to tackle social problems in the medical, educational and social work services. During the third decade ( 70's ), Caritas developed the first phases of various social work services to assist families in need as well as individuals, youth, the elderly and the handicapped, to enhance their functioning capacity. Our models of intervention have been both remedial and preventive, and our partners have largely been social institutions such as schools, churches, hospitals, the police, the government and other NGO social service agencies.
During the fourth decade ( 90's ), we moved confidently into other settings, those places where the original source of social hazards and issues are likely to occur: in playgrounds and parks, factories, in the work place, among new arrivals, international connections, special groups identified as high risk such as drug addicts and party goers, the mentally ill and people with chronic stress, couples with marriages at risk, and the unemployed etc., as well as many others whose human rights were being ignored or violated. Our partners have been parents, employers, health workers, legal people, educators, and business enterprises. We have taken on the role of bridge builders, of advocators, and supporters of mutual help groups. |

In the fifth decade, we look forward to the mission of community care, of community building and the promotion of integral human development. Our vision is to advocate for social responsibility , social inclusion and social cohesion . Service users are exhorted to take up mutual care, mutual support and volunteerism, so as to include all to assume their social responsibility as their agenda for social justice. It is the goal of social inclusion, to include all disadvantaged groups within our reach and transform them into active participants and contributors towards community building.
In our aspiration for social cohesion, it is our hope to create a partnership with an emergent group of new corporate philanthropists in the development of ˇ§the third sectorˇ¨ in order to enhance the collaboration of business groups, church groups, and the general public to participate in a commitment to social responsibility and join in the alliance for community building as a form of support to social services.
We are particularly grateful to all our supporters with whom we have established a trusting relationship, for their material, spiritual, and moral support and encouragement. Without them we would never have attained such quality service delivery. As Caritas is now entering its fifth decade of existence, we renew our pledge to help build a better Hong Kong with a heart full of love in the spirit of Caritas. |
