In June 2022, Caritas Dr. & Mrs. Olinto de Sousa Integrated Family Service Centre has launched a project for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and their parents—Walk hand-in-hand with Arts~ SEN Children and the Parents Support Project. Mr. Eric Winkler sponsored the project, which will last for one and a half year. It aims at providing arts-based intervention for the SEN children and their parents.

Expected Impact:

Through arts intervention, we hope to:

  1. enhance competence of fathers and strengthen father's role in parenting;
  2. enrich family relationship both in father-child relationship & couple relationship;
  3. promote self-care of mothers and reduce parental stress of parents with SEN children;
  4. improve concentration of SEN children. It is expected the family well-being, couple relationship and children's development will be improved at the same time.

We hope our project can accompany the SEN children and their parents to overcome the challenges when growing up, strengthen their family relationships, and provide support for them.

The first group of our project had started in August 2022 and completed in October 2022. The participants revealed that the arts-assisted intervention group provided a relaxing atmosphere for creation. They felt surprised that the creation process was easy to handle and the product was always unexpectedly satisfactory. Some father participants reported that our group provided a precious opportunity for them to interact with their child solely and help them discover some positive characteristics of their children.

For the sake of letting more SEN children and their parents be served by our project, we will visit different districts to provide arts-intervened group services from December 2022 to August 2023.

By the way, we are providing online services on Facebook and Instagram to share the needs of SEN children, information about fatherhood and motherhood, and home-arts activities. We would be thankful if you could support our online service by ‘follow’, ‘like’ and ‘subscribing’ to our page.
